Junior Research Engineer
Job Mission — Junior Research Engineer
Location: Nice
Context
The EDHEC Climate Institute works on the integration of climate risk into finance, developing the methodologies that allow investors and financial institutions to measure, price and act on climate-related risks. A large part of this work consists of turning research outputs into production-grade software and data pipelines: taking the underlying business logic out of research code and into maintainable, reproducible production processes that the institute and its partners can rely on. This role sits at the intersection of that effort — bridging financial research on climate risk and the robust engineering that brings it to life.
Mission
Assist in managing, maintaining and improving the existing production pipelines that underpin the institute's climate risk methodologies. Because these pipelines implement financial research methodologies, the role requires a solid understanding of finance: the person must be able to read the code and grasp what it is doing in financial terms, then suggest and implement methodological changes as well as fix bugs in production processes, working alongside the research engineering team to keep these pipelines robust and up to date as the research agenda on climate risk integration evolves.
Key responsibilities
-
Understand the financial methodologies the pipelines implement and how the code translates them.
-
Manage and maintain existing production pipelines.
-
Suggest and implement methodological improvements and enhancements, contributing to the institute's research agenda on climate risk integration.
-
Diagnose and fix bugs in production.
-
Package research business logic into well-structured Python code.
-
Uphold code and data versioning discipline across the pipelines.
Technical environment
-
Python packaged and managed with uv.
-
Functional-programming best practices.
-
Polars for data processing, with Pandera-validated schemas.
-
Git for code versioning.
-
DVC and S3 buckets for data versioning and pipeline management.
Profile sought
A junior data / research engineer with a solid knowledge of finance, able to understand the financial methodologies behind the pipelines and to reason about what the code is doing. Foundational Python skills are required, together with either familiarity with, or a clear willingness to learn, the tools listed above. The role calls for rigor, attention to detail, and the ability to suggest and implement methodological changes while working effectively with guidance on production-grade pipelines.
Long-term perspectives
This role is not limited to maintenance. As the person grows into the team, they will increasingly help shape new methodological developments in the integration of climate risk into finance — not just running the existing methodologies, but improving them and designing new ones.
Because these developments feed directly into the institute's research output, the role offers a genuine path to contribute to research papers published around the methodologies the person helps build and productionize, with the opportunity, over time, to grow into a co-authorship role. For an ambitious junior engineer, this is a chance to combine hands-on production engineering with a long-term research trajectory at the frontier of climate finance.
Attractive salary and bonus, healthcare and pension plan coverage.
The salary will be determined according to EDHEC's pay scale, the candidate's qualifications and experience.
